Bremerhaven is a young city – founded 1827 as “new” port of venerable hanseatic city Bremen at the estuary mouth of the River Weser, the city grew quickly. It got world famous in the 19. century and at the beginning of 20. century as Germanys most important port for Emigrants, who leave for the “New World”. Soon Bremerhaven became also the most important fishing harbour. Shipbuilding- and port industry shaped the economic side of the city for decades.
Today Bremerhaven is not just looking to a strong maritime tradition, but developed a seminal maritime future.
The coastal city is the fourth largest container port with high modern logistical infrastructure. There is no other capable port, which is used more by car in- and exporters.
Fishery became an innovative sector of food industry. It impresses with new impulses like sustainable fishery, renouncement of additives in convenience products, organic fish from aquaculture, high transparency like the CO2 Footprint for frozen foods etc.
The Center for Aquaculture Research of IMARE, the sensor technology laboratory of ttz, the courses of the academy Bremerhaven (food technology and blue biotechnology) and the AWI Alfred-Wegener-Institute for polar research and oceanography do pioneer work.
Furthermore Bremerhaven is deservedly a leading European centre and home port of offshore wind energy industry. The local Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology is unique in Germany. It creates a prominent interface between science and economy. Producers of offshore wind energy systems for offshore wind parks, huge like a generating station crates the basis for the realisation of energy turn.
On the occasion of Aquaculture Forum Bremerhaven 2012-2013, we are glad to be able to present you the new face of Bremerhaven.
